On the bank of river Jagbudi, geographically protected and isolated by Sahyadri mountains is situated our small, beautiful town; Khed. It has overall a population of around 2.3lacs. Very small proportion of it lives in the main town. Remaining larger chunk of it lives in rural areas. With some villages at almost 50 km away from the city, it becomes vital to have good health care facilities in the city itself. Despite of being strategically located, Khed city lacks good amount of health care centres. With exception of few surgical and maternity nursing homes, we don’t have proper speciality set ups which are as essential as food and water.
Since the time I became old enough to understand history, geography of my region, it always troubled me to digest the fact that we lack proper health care facilities here in our own town. I remember when I was in 7th standard in my village Sapirli, my mother was very sick. We had to rush to a good doctor who could see her and treat her promptly. Unfortunately at that time transport was very weak. We only had two ST buses. One in the early morning and one in the afternoon. Our village people had to carry my mother in a bamboo basket attached to long wooden logs on their shoulders in heavy rainfall with mud and water logged Kachcha road. just like how Vasudev carried lord Krishna in a small bamboo basked on his head through flooded river Jamuna. My mother got well after few days. But memory of that dark night still haunts me. Today after almost 20 years later situation in village has changed. We do have proper roads, fair enough transport, wireless mobile connectivity. But as far as clinics, nursing homes, hospitals in town are concerned, the situation has not been very encouraging. We are still 20 years behind the outside world where super speciality hospitals have become new normals.
When I was studying medicine I thoroughly researched my locale. Remotely located villages, hilly terrain, pathetic transport and roads leads to very high volume of trauma and accident cases. Almost 90% of them can be managed here if they reach in time. Secondly most of the rural population comes under age group of 60 to 85 years of age. We call it as a geriatric age group. Whether most of us here will agree or not this group is most neglected one. It has got its own set of problems. Decreased vitality, poor state of nutrition, fragile bones, comorbidities geriatric trauma, osteoporosis, pathological fractures etc. As far as town is concerned it has got most dynamic group of population, working and studying age group. Here most orthopaedic problems are related to Obesity, osteomalacia, RTA, sport injuries etc. For all these situations, potentially manageable conditions we were lacking proper orthopaedic set up. We have dreamt of addressing this issue with inception if our new venture GEETAI The Bone and Joint Clinic.
Right from the beginning I had this dream to come back to my own homeland and try to understand these problems and help my own people to come out of these problems with any possible way I can. After completing 13 long years of medical schooling I have returned here and working as an Orthopaedic surgeon since 2019 in Khed . I have meticulously developed my own surgical team since last two and half year. Performed almost 500 orthopaedic procedures successfully. As a team work we have performed many firsts in Khed as far as Orthopaedics is concerned. Total Knee replacements, total hip replacements, shoulder and knee arthroscopy, ACL reconstruction in kabaddi players, army people and police & Army Bharti aspirants.complicated trauma cases , paediatric trauma and congenital abnormalities etc. We have successfully performed varied orthopaedic procedures with reproducible results.
Treating Geriatric fractures has become speciality sort of thing. We can proudly say that we have made many nannies and grannies live dignified life by operating upon them and making them independent again. Yes we got lots of blessings in return. Still we as a team as a family felt little less satisfied. We were not delivering our 100%. We were yet to provide wholesome orthopaedic care including physiotherapy and rehabilitation under one roof. With our new venture GEETAI The Bone & Joint Clinic we are glad to say that we are setting new treatment standards here.
